Academia and Industry Partnerships Go Far Beyond Internships

Academia and Industry Partnerships Go Far Beyond Internships Academia and Industry Partnerships Go Far Beyond Internships Academia and Industry Partnerships Go Far Beyond InternshipsInnovative, strategic partnerships between academia and industry are a major component of how engineering schools are starting to train the next generation of engineers.Schools such as Arizona State Universitys Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering are stepping up efforts to form what Fulton Engineering Dean Kyle Squires calls comprehensive partnerships in which an industry partner is involved with university programs across a broad spectrum. Its vital for us to be able to produce the kind of talent that industry is going to need in moving forward, he says. We want to be preferred providers to drive talent that makes sense for them. Its a different combination of variables than in the past. While the partnerships may not initially be the comprehensive relationship thats desired, they often morph into that. M ost partnerships between academia and industry usually start with a critical need for industry, which is usually the need for talent. These new types of relationships typically go far beyond endowed professorships and traditional internships and co-op opportunities for students. Its vital for us to be able to produce the kind of talent that industry is going to need in moving forward.Dean Kyle Squires, Arizona State University Universities partner with industry for manufacturing research innovation. Image Arizona State UniversityFor You The Rise of the Master of Engineering Management DegreeWe encourage our industry partners to think about being educational partners and research partners, as well as employment partners, by being engaged in the full arc of the student experience, says Robin Hammond, director of the Fulton School of Engineering Career Center. The hiring process is no longer about a company showing up at a career fair to interview graduating students. Its m uch more like a courtship over a period of time to allow each party to decide if its a good fit, she says. Our approach is very holistic. It starts with our thinking about what companies might need, either an immediate need or a pipeline need, she says, noting that a conversation then follows about how they can positively influence the educational process. That system benefits students by because for them everything is integrated what they learn in the classroom and knowing what industry needs, she says.Industry involvement can take place in many ways beyond offering internships and co-op experiences. Those include funding undergraduate scholarships and graduate research fellowships providing access to faculty funding research to advance technology and provide students with hands-on, collaborative experiences with new technologies student supervision partnering in a campus research center or institute to help steer technology development and participation in informational career eve nts for students. Some of the Fulton Schools partners include Avnet, Benchmark Electronics, Concept Laser (a subsidiary of General Electric), Dash, Google, Honeywell Aerospace, Intel, ON Semiconductor, and Phoenix Analysis Design Technologies (PADT).For example, Concept Laser and PADT were among companies partnering with Fulton Schools to establish a Manufacturing Research and Innovation Hub, the largest additive manufacturing research facility in the Southwest, which opened in early 2017. Both companies were especially interested in testing their prototypes there. Avnet is a partner in the Avnet Innovation Lab at the Fulton Schools, which encourages and supports aspiring technology entrepreneurs with awards from a $250,000 annual grant.Fulton Schools and Dash, a blockchain-powered digital currency, have a partnership designed to accelerate research, development, and education for advancing transaction speed, efficiency, and security of blockchain technology as well as to expand its uses. The partnership has a scholarship component, research lab, industry open-source projects, and the development of a graduate course in blockchain technology. This approach affords students a variety of vorkaufsrechts for hands-on, real-world experiences that start with a first semester introduction to engineering and continues throughout their educational years. We call it Engineer from Day 1, Squires says. From day one, we begin to get the students to think like engineers and designers, and to work on teams. In practice, they are going to be on diverse teams working on complicated systems. As much as you can practice that, you are going to be better going forward. One option is a formal industry-sponsored extracurricular opportunity called an e-project. Students at the Polytechnic School, one of Fultons six schools, are involved in about 45 e-projects each year. For example, this year, a team of students is working on a project for Honeywell minimizing the structure and weight o f parts for future aircraft structures, engines, mechanical components, and avionics boxes. Students are using mathematical models and computer-aided design to predict stiffness, strength, and fatigue life of honeycomb designs, and validating their stiffness and strength through 3D printing. The goal is to create t-shaped engineers by making available a multitude of experiential opportunities that students can have outside the classroom that will enable them to develop a breadth of skills, Hammond says. Engineers are in high demand, but not just any engineer. Its your best engineers that industry wants when looking at the talent pipeline.Nancy Giges is an independent writer.Read MoreMeasuring MotivationRobots Modeled on Bees Sense Rather than ThinkSolar-Powered Drones Go Mainstream

Online Recruiting Tactics and Tips

Online Recruiting Tactics and TipsOnline Recruiting Tactics and TipsOnline recruiting can use a variety of tactics. The basics include posting open positions on job boards - or listing them with professional associations that maintain a resume bank of job seekers in a specific industry or area of expertise. But theres more you can do to increase your chances of attracting top talent to your company.Enhance the company websiteFor effective verbunden recruiting, businesses should keep their own websites up to date, and the sites should be inviting to job seekers. In addition to product and service information, the site needs to make clear why the firm is a great place to work. For example, use the About Us and News sections to emphasize the benefits of the companys work environment.Use social media for internet recruitingIn recent years, small businesses have been finding that professional networking sites such as LinkedIn - and, increasingly, social networking sites such as Facebook - provide great opportunities for online recruiting. In many cases, the best candidates are already employed, so these networking sites offer ways to get in touch with passive job seekers who are not actively scanning job postings.Robert Half has been helping companies with their hiring since 1948. Let us help you.REQUEST TALENTAvoid the pitfalls of online recruitingBusinesses need to be aware of certain limitations and pitfalls when participating in online recruiting. For instance, the major job boards are typically tapped out by other employers looking for candidates. And hiring managers should be cautious when reaching out to individuals they encounter online. Thats because the digital equivalent of a cold call - such as sending an unsolicited email to promising candidates - can be counterproductive. Individuals voluntarily post professional information to these sites, but many prefer to be contacted through mutual acquaintances or by people who are already in their networks. Maintaining the personal touchKeep in mind that internet recruiting efforts should augment, not replace, traditional one-on-one personal interactions. These crucial contacts should still include outreach to potential candidates through networking events and campus job fairs, as well as relationships built with reputable recruiters. Direct contact helps employers and candidates better understand each others needs and build a rapport. And working with a dedicated recruiter makes it much easier to reach individuals with the specific skills a small business needs.Theres no question that Internet recruiting has helped small businesses seek out new talent. But the deeper nature of personal relationships is simply not available online. Therefore, the most successful hiring strategies combine both the high-tech and high-touch approaches.Learn about 10 job search websites that set the standard for online recruiting.

How to Make Your Move From College to the Corporate World

How to Make Your Move From College to the Corporate World After all of the hard work youve put in for the last four years while getting an education, there are few things in life more exciting than graduation. Trouble is, your hardest test is yet to come making it in the real world. Some of you may have had an opportunity to experience the world of work through an internship, while others may be leaving college without this experience which may makethem feela bit uneasy. To save you some time in trying to figure out what your next move should be, Iveput together some tried and true methods of preparing for your entry into the world of work.1. Have a PlanSpend some time thinking honestly about yourselfWhat do you enjoy doing? What kind of environment do you need to do your best work? What are you good at?What are your life goals, and what kind of jobs would be the best options to sttze those?Where do you want to live, and how far are you willing to commute?Asking yourself all of these questions will put you on the right career search path and help you determine what questions to ask prospective employers as you try to select the right job for yourself.2. Companies Have Ads People Have ResumesYour resume is marketing collateral, and it has one purpose to get you an interview. You have about a minute to get the attention of the person reading it maybe even less and you wantto makethe kind of impression that lands you in the yes pile. Write clear, concise sentences that make your point, and save the details for the interview. Organize your bullet points in groups to present an organized, logical flow. Find a way to support what you did with numbers that demonstrate you are a results-oriented individual. If it takes a hiring manager too long to figure out what you did at your previous jobs, theywill likely move on. 3. Network, Network, NetworkYour senior year is the best time to learn how to network and master the art of interviewing. Go to on-campus job fairs, connect with alumni, and keep a close eye on company websites. You may uncover a great contact or discover a potential future job opportunity. If you already accepted a job, be sure to stay in touch with the people you met during the interview process and attend any new-hire events the company hosts. These events are a great opportunity for you to develop relationships and get a better sense of the company. At Cognolink, our events give new hires the opportunity to meet people from across all departments, members of the executive team and, of course, other new hires4. Consider the Total OpportunityWhen considering job opportunities, resist the temptation to focustoo much on the starting base salary. Instead, look at the total package. Is there a performance incentive program to earn additional cash rewards? What is a typical career path at the company? What is the general schedule ofpromotions and sal ary increases? How much paid time off will you receive? How much of yourhealth insurance premium will be covered? Is there a company match to the retirement program? What pre-tax programs are offered to help you reduce your taxable earnings (e.g., a commuter program or flexible spending account)?Does the employerprovide company-sponsored training and/or a study support reimbursement program that will help you develop your skills? Is there a pantry stocked with snacks and beverages?Assessing these factors at each potential job, and comparing the results across companies, will allow you to see the total value of each opportunity and, ultimately, make the best career decision for yourself.

Adding 20 minutes to your commute is like getting a 19% pay cutAdding 20 minutes to your commute is like getting a 19% pay cutWith the need for commuter etiquette and having to be prepared for any situation you might run into going to or heading home from work, the travel process can be super stressful.Researchers from the University of the West of England found that a 20 minute increase in round-trip commute time has the same effect on job satisfaction as a 19% reduction in income. The Commuting and Wellbeing Studyfound that with each additional minute of commute time, your work satisfaction plummets, as does the state of your mental health and how much you enjoy your free time. Meanwhile, your stress levels spike. The research team looked at how commuting affected the wellbeing of mora than 26,000 people working in England between 2009-2010 and 2014-2015, and the findings are based on data from other research called Understanding Society.Heres what you need to know about how your com mute could be affecting your lifeA long commute is a downer, with a few notable exceptionsIn what will not come as news to anyone who has a long or unpleasant commute, the researchers found that longer journeys to work have adverse subjective wellbeing effects, particularly through loss of free time.Yet, researchers found, a frustrating commute isnt necessarily a death sentence for your happiness - particularly if you accepted the longer commute knowing that it was for a job you enjoy or are well compensated for.In addition, if everyone else has a similar commute, you may accept it as normal, researchers found. The acceptance of lengthier commutes being an unavoidable part may only be retained if the commute is considered unavoidable and a social norm, researchers found.Active commuters are happier than passive onesTaking certain differences between people into account, people who bike to their job have higher self-reported health than those who are stuck behind the wheel of a car or in a seat on a bus, researchers found.People who take the train and drive to work were more stressed out than those who take the bus, researchers found. But the simple shift of mode of transport to something more active like biking - or walking - led to more enjoyment of free time and ones job and less stress, researchers found. What employers can doEmployers, take notenzeichen the study found thattheres greater job satisfaction when employees work from home, which is one surefire way to give them shorter commute times.Having a quicker commute also ups the chances of an employee remaining at their company.

Why Its Important to Take Vacations From Work - The Muse

Why Its Important to Take Vacations From Work - The MuseWhy Its Important to Take Vacations From Work Ah, vacation. Its a beautiful thing, whether your definition of it is traveling to some exotic locale or staying put and exploring spots in your hometown. It doesnt matter if you prefer stay-cating, going abroad, or taking a road trip complete with a tent and camping gear. Breaking from work and taking a breather can be done in a variety of ways. Its no surprise then that what people state as their reasons for going on vacation vary, but with a similar common theme. Time away from work- and everything that goes with it, from emails to to-do lists to drafting proposals and attending meetings- is essential to your well-being. Although it may seem like Im stating the obvious- after all, who doesnt love a little RR?- the fact that many people dont take vacations from work, instead leaving precious unused time on the table tells me one thing Its necessary for a healthy reminder about why you should absolutely take time to recharge. The following Musers stories ought to be enough to convince you to put in a request for time off stat.1. It Encourages CreativityIm at my most creative when Im exploring, so vacation gives me a chance to think big, outrageous thoughts and play around with my most experimental ideas. When I come back, bedrngnis only do I feel refreshed, but Ive often made some sort of breakthrough in the rest of my work or life. Kathryn Minshew, Founder CEO2. It Helps Prevent BurnoutI take vacation for many reasons. I worry about burning out- not just in terms of declining in productivity, but in terms of enjoying my job and the people around me. If I catch myself sniping at someone because Im in a bad mood, or feeling exhausted on a regular basis, or not looking forward to going to work (even though I do enjoy my work), I know its time to unplug. Alyse Kalish, Editor3. It Makes it Easier to Gain PerspectiveI enjoy vacation to recalibrate. Its easy to get plugged into the daily routine and forget about all the life that exists outside of it. By traveling, exploring, and adventuring I refresh my understanding that theres a lot of right ways to live and feel charged knowing that theres not one way to do it. Oh, I also like to have a good tan, too. Dan Ratner, Account Executive4. It Encourages Quality Time With Loved OnesI take vacation for a few different reasons. 1) To spend more time with family and other loved ones, 2) to de-stress (hard for me to do actually) and stop thinking about work, and 3) for short vacations (e.g., one day here or there) where Im attending to family or personal responsibilities. For longer vacations- I want the experience (via travel) to go to places I have not been and that I believe will ideally both enrich my life and strengthen my family bonds and friendship bonds (depending on whom I go with). Sometimes, Im just worn out and want to sleep in for a day or feel like I can go the gym anytime I want and no t have to get there before 6 AM. Adi Dehejia, CFO5. It Gives You Something to Look Forward ToLifes short, so I think its necessary to put aside time to have fun and see the world Plus, I enjoy having something to look forward to. Jimmy Okuszka, Content Associate6. It Makes it Possible to Connect With YourselfTheres nothing quite like traveling alone in a new country. Youre responsible for having fun. Youre responsible for meeting new people. Youre responsible for making it memorable. It shocks the system into creating new friends, connecting with other people, and expanding your horizons. Most importantly, I feel like it really helps create innerhalb peace of mind/confidence in yourself.Dan Kelske, Enterprise Account ManagerThe variety of these responses should tell you one thing You dont need a formulated reason to break from work and enjoy your life outside the office. You also dont need to take a set amount of time, though if youre curious about how to take a long vacation, I enc ourage you to read this. Its all about how I personally pulled off a three-week stress-free vacation.Spoiler I did that by planning ahead and using this free worksheet. Now, what are you waiting for? Look at your calendar and see when youre going to take off and go on that vacation that you deserve.
